Tale As Old as Time Proposal

Elyse's favorite movie since she was 2 years old has always been Disney's Beauty and the Beast. When she was little, she loved Chip's spunk and thought she too looked like the whimsical, brunette cartoon. As she grew up, she related to the princess's character of always wanting more, continuous yearn to learn and explore, and a love of hosting guests.

Joe knew this very early on in his courting experience as their first kiss was on Halloween at college. Elyse (of course) was dressed as Belle and Joe looked like Danny Zuko in jeans, leather jacket, and sunglasses. (Anyway, We'll get to that story another time)

Being a hopeless romantic, Joe planned a two-week long proposal. Fourteen days were planned and executed to the minutest detail - from reservations, clue cards, gifts, and surprises around every corner - he didn't miss a beat. Week one was designed to be a ploy, while week two was the real-deal. Elyse had no idea any of this was happening behind-the-scenes nor suspected it as it was occurring. When she would ask "what's the occasion?" Joe would reply with a coy answer like, "I wanted to surprise you," or "We're celebrating your new job" to throw Elyse off any trail. Lucky for him, it was perfect timing!

In fact, It's easier just to show you.

#1 - Friday, August Third

Joe landed in Florida on August 3rd at 2am due to plane delays and redirects. He had the ride of a lifetime through a storm and originally landing 100 miles away from his intended destination. Thankfully the storm subsided and he could land safely at the airport where Elyse and her mom patiently chatted and waited. They all exchanged hellos, drove back to the house, and prepared for tomorrow's work day.

Joe unpacked and went upstairs to say goodnight to Elyse. Before she shut her eyes, Elyse did her usual goodnight routine and asked Joe for a secret. He replied with "How about a surprise instead?" Confused, Elyse looked up with a smile and said okay. He handed her a small envelope that he had tucked behind her pillow without her noticing. She opened it up to find a card with a gold heart design, inside was a hand-written note saying:

Let's hit the Little Big Town,

For a night in our best plaid,

Blast some music and dance a bit,

To songs like Kerosene & Something Bad.

Let's Do Something that Blake can no longer do.

And go see Miranda,

Just Me and You!

She was excited for the opportunity to see Miranda Lambert as neither of them had seen her in concert and spoke many times about going some day. Miranda Lambert is one of Joe's favorite country singers, but she also was the first artist he introduced Elyse to when exploring country music and making her a "Kick Ass Country Playlist." Elyse is an avid fan now as well.

They worked during the day, packed up, grabbed a quick meal, and headed over to the Fairgrounds & Amphitheater. They arrived early and decided to explored some of the vendors that were hanging out in the parking lot. Elyse won a t-shirt sponsoring a radio station and they toured the venue. Once it began, they couldn't stop dancing, singing, and having a good time with the people around them. Miranda and Little Big Town showcased an amazing performance with zings at Blake Shelton, fierce female cover songs, and lyrics of heartbreak and small towns.

After the concert, the couple headed home. Elyse thought they would go back to enjoy the rest of weekend, but Joe had other plans. He then surprised her with poem #2.

#2 - Saturday, August Fourth

Before Elyse went to sleep, Joe gave her the next clue. She could potentially solve it early, but he knew he needed to give her ample time to be up and ready for their next adventure. He handed her the same envelop. She excitedly sat up and opened it to read:

You can sleep a bit,

But then I need you up,

We have a little drive,

To grab a morning cup.

Oh by the way,

You should pack a bag,

We won't be home til Sunday,

Then you get to brag.

She peppered Joe with questions or threw ideas of what she thought the answer could be, but Joe didn't give an inch to ruin the surprise. He later kissed her goodnight and Elyse would eventually pass out.

He woke her up around 10am. Things didn't go to plan at first as Elyse's mom needed help and her brother's car broke down. After a two-hour delay, they finally were on their way to Tampa. Joe drove Elyse's car to keep her in suspense. He parked on a side street and escorted her to a coffee shop that they had been talking about for months. Buddy Brew Coffee is one of the highlighted cafes in the area and they love exploring. The couple tried something new at a place they did not know, where they enjoyed lunch with a cup of Joe, and Elyse was given the next card.

#3 - Saturday, August Fourth

After a cup of coffee and lunch, Joe slid the 3rd card across the table to Elyse. Inside it read:

Now we've had our fix,

And should be ready for the day,

We'll need some help,

To point us on our way.

Directions are in the phone,

For touring the Big City,

Hope what we find,

Is pretty not shitty!

She was excited at the opportunity for a scavenger hunt, and, of course, had a million questions. ("Is it just us?," "Are we competing?," "Is it just in downtown Tampa?," "Do we need to run?" - you know the important ones to ask). Still she wasn't getting any answers to her surprises.

Joe escorted her to the car and drove to the center of Tampa. They parked in a parking deck and turned on the game. Through a series of questions and texts, the couple ran around downtown counting pillars, reading plaques, and exploring museums. It was the perfect opportunity to explore a city they had been to on countless occasions and still miss so much. They loved going to the Tampa Theater and even had the chance to search through the Henry B Plant Museum by the University of Tampa. Through their journey they ended up in front of the Tampa Bay Convention Center where ComiCon was being hosted. They met a few characters outside and saw Optimus Prime! Elyse and Joe continued on their journey through the heat and took note of other events and places they would like to go when they both become locals.

At the end of the tour, they took a break on the top of a walking bridge overlooking the water where Joe handed Elyse another hint.

#4 - Saturday, August Fourth

The same small envelop with gold-heart design and hand-written note, this time said:

After a long day,

of the Big City Hunt,

Time to go somewhere familiar,

Overlooking the Bayfront.

We can sit and rest,

And eat good food,

Maybe some drinks,

To help set the mood

Joe wouldn't tell Elyse where they were going, but it all made sense since he asked her to pack a bag before they left for the day. He put the GPS on his phone, but kept it out of view for Elyse. It seemed like they were headed to Clearwater Beach, a place that sends terrible shivers up Elyse's back from the long commutes previously, but he turned a corner and pulled into the Grand Hyatt of Tampa Bay. Here was where they celebrated their first Valentine's Day together by having dinner at their rooftop restaurant called Armani's. They had said they always wanted to go back there and one day stay overnight. Tonight was that night.

Joe made sure to have a room with a view overlooking the water. The two of them sat in front of the window watching dolphins, boats, and people fishing. They later enjoyed the hotel's amenities and eventually made it over to Bahama Breeze for dinner. Joe is always romantic and they spoke of their relationship thus far and where they want to go. ​ After dessert, they went back to the hotel, fell asleep and woke up the next morning to check out. They explored the hotel once more and ended up at Oystercatcher's Sunday Brunch before heading home. Next time, they'll remember to get some to-go boxes.

#5 - Monday, August Sixth

They arrived back at the house and recapped their weekend with the family. They finally sat down. to relax on the couch and spend time with the family. Joe never told Elyse how many cards she would be receiving so each one was a surprise. With both of them working remotely, she also wasn't expecting anymore extravagant surprises.

But of course, Joe always has a romantic magic trick up his sleeve. On Monday night, while they were watching a show, Joe handed Elyse another card labeled #5. She smiled and read it out-loud:

So this one may depress,

Because we still need money,

So there's nothing fun here,

But we're together, Honey!

Elyse laughed, gave Joe a playful nudge, a kiss on the cheek, then went back to cuddling. A moment or two went by when all of a sudden Joe got up and handed Elyse another card. (You didn't really think that that was all, did you?! Of course, not!) This one was different though. It wasn't in an envelop and instead even smaller.

No, this was a gift card for a Girls Night Out filled with pampering at Touch Nails. He told Elyse to go out with her mom and sister to get their nails done. This made Elyse extra suspicious as she knows this could be hours long and take time away from Joe's visit. She originally declined saying it's too much money and she'd rather wait until he leaves, but he insisted. In fact, they were planning a Guys Night Out instead.

Elyse's antennas went up, but Joe deflected and had her parents' support. Joe had asked for their blessing months back and had been communicating with them the plan ever since. Elyse's siblings did not know as they kept the circle small so word did not accidentally spread. During Guys Night Out, Joe informed Elyse's brothers of the plans to come the following week while The girls distracted Elyse. They came back with freshly painted fingers and toes - completely picture ready ;)

#6 - Thursday, August ninth

About three days went by before Elyse received another envelop. On Thursday evening, after work and before dinner, Joe slipped another note hidden somewhere in her room. He had fun as she sprinted around excited looking for a tiny white envelope. She finally found it tucked in her night stand drawer and it read:

I'm sorry to tell you,

But grab clothes and a dress,

Time to pack again,

And time to be a Princess.

We leave at 12:30,

In the car for a drive,

Not telling you to where,

You'll see when we arrive.

She asked the same questions as last, but this time more specific: "How many days are we staying?" "Do I need a bathing suit?" "What shoes do I need to bring?" Joe wouldn't give an inch when it came to spoiling the surprise and let her pack as much or as little as she wanted. For Elyse, that means over packing.

The next morning, they drove across the street to try a new waffle place called Batter and Dough and get coffee. Once they were finished, Joe led Elyse to her car, put the directions in his phone, and Elyse plugged in hers to become the car DJ. They sang the entire way and Elyse started to recognize the route. She guessed that they were going to Disney World for the day, but was surprised when they drove past the entrances. Instead they took backroads and ended up in front of the Grand Floridian. She was thrilled as she had never stayed there before and knows its one of Joe's favorite places.

Joe drove to valet parking and took out three bags from the trunk. Elyse only knew of hers, let alone two others! Joe checked in while Elyse explored the lobby. He didn't want her to hear any of the potential surprises. They dropped their stuff off in the room and explored the amenities. While they walked, shopped, and snapped, Joe dropped the news that they have a reservation at 2:30pm. He took her hand and led her to the Tea Room. Knowing Elyse drinks tea daily, he had scheduled time for two.

They both were able to pick out their own flavor and snack on mini sandwiches, biscuits, and sweets. During this time, the waiter announced that Cinderella and Prince Charming will descend from the staircase and they can step away from the table to watch. Elyse jumped at the opportunity and saw the beautiful couple dance in the foyer, Joe quickly joined her. When they returned, they continued sipping and snacking until it was over. When the bill was paid, they explored the rest of the campus and headed back to the room where he had placed the next clue on her pillow.

#7 - Friday, August tenth

Another magical surprise. Elyse and Joe returned to their hotel room where she found another envelop secretly placed on her pillow. She can't hide her excitement realizing she is living her own fairytale. This hand-written note said:

Hope you enjoyed the surprise,

And your afternoon tea.

I'm sure you don't think that's it,

Because that wouldn't be me.

I need you ready by 7:15,

In a nice evening gown,

I know you'll look stunning,

When it's time to escort you down.

Thankfully Joe had helped Elyse pack. She had bought a dress a while ago, but waited for the perfect date night to wear it. They finished getting ready and Joe held her hand as he escorted her down the stairs. They waited in the lobby listening to the pianist play all of their favorite songs from Beauty and the Beast and Tangled. Elyse assumed they were waiting for an Uber or were early for a reservation. Before she knew it, a cast member dressed in a tux approached them and said he was looking for Joe Maloney. They shook hands, introduced himself, and escorted them to a private dining for two on the 5th floor. He led them to the elevator where he used a special key FOB to gain access to the floor. Here they saw a sign that said "Private Event." They walked past the sign to find a table for two with black and white linens and rose petals. The table had a beautiful view of both the Magic Kingdom castle and Epcot sphere. They were handed a specialized menu with their names and date on it. They could choose from any of the four options listed for each course of a five-course meal. They chose accordingly and planned to taste the other's dishes. Each one plated and decorated more beautiful than the other. They danced and listened to the music that the pianist played in the foyer or the band just two floors below. They were completely separated from the rest of the magical Disney world and visitors. They found themselves lost in each other and the pixie dust that sparkled their stage.

When it was time for the Magic Kingdom fireworks, the man in the tuxedo moved the table to the perfect window view and served dessert. They sipped wine, held hands, and watched the most perfect display of pyrotechnics. When the dinner ended, the two walked the campus at night talking about how amazing the experience was. They felt like a king and queen as they headed upstairs to end another perfect day.

#8 - Saturday, August Eleventh

The next morning Joe gently woke Elyse up by teasing her with another card. When she could finally see clearly, she read:

This morning you will,

Be royally fed,

You can just relax,

And have breakfast in bed.

We're in no hurry,

The whole day is ours,

To do what we want,

Until it's time for showers.

Joe heard Elyse's stomach grumble and instead gave her the option to order room service or check out the continental breakfast. She chose the later as her stomach yelled. but also wanted to do more exploring. They enjoyed some Mickey-shaped waffles, frittatas, and fruit before taking some coffee and tea to go. They walked around and planned to go in the pool. They finished getting ready, headed towards the water, and floated for a while. They were able to enjoy the main pool and hot tub before a thunderstorm rolled through.

Joe decided they should go back to the room to relax since most of the features are outdoors and they had already explored the shops. Elyse yawned and Joe thought it was the perfect opportunity for her to nap. He kissed her on the forehead and said he was going to shower in the meantime. She didn't question it as Joe hates taking naps. Once her head hit the pillow, she was out. A little while later, Joe came by with another note.

#9 - Saturday, August Eleventh

To wake Elyse from her short nap, he kissed her on the forehead and gently whispered to her. She woke up and saw Joe dressed to the nines in a new blue suit with a blue and yellow patterned tie and small note in his hand. She smiled as Joe asked her to read it. It said:

I'm getting low on surprises,

But I always have one more,

After your shower,

Check behind the closet door.

Meet me at the top of the stairs,

At 2:55 on the dime!

Keep an open ear for,

A Tale as Old as Time...

This note took more special instructions. He guided her through the next steps. He was going to leave to "check on some things," but meet her at the top of the staircase at 2:55pm. In the meantime, she can shower and put on the robe, but once she's ready to get dressed she would find her outfit in the closet. There are two different sizes and she could choose which one fit her best. It also is a technology-free date so no watches or phones would be needed.

Elyse hopped in the shower right away, put the robe on, brushed her hair and did her makeup. She excitedly ran to the closet to find two of the same yellow, strapless dresses resembling something similar to Belle's from Beauty and the Beast. She finished getting ready and waited anxiously for 2:55pm. When it was time, she placed her phone in her bag and walked around the floor to the elevator.

To her surprise, Joe was already waiting for her outside of the elevator. They commented as to how beautiful and handsome the other looked. Joe escorted Elyse towards the stairs. He stalled at the top looking out the window and eventually the two of them walked down the grand staircase towards the foyer. The pianist was late so the two of them chatted and took pictures on the shelf nearest the piano. Elyse noticed that some people were staring at them, but she figured it was because they were dressed up in clothes resembling the movie. Joe asked where she thinks they were going and they chatted about the restaurants located on campus and her idea of Belle's castle in Magic Kingdom.

The pianist arrived and began to play. After his opening number, he asked for requests when Joe asked for Beauty and the Beast. He played it beautifully and with perfection. Joe asked Elyse to dance. They swayed by the piano as he played. Joe spoke of forever and their dreams of the future. He asked if she felt like a princess because she will always be his.

He stopped, grabbed both her hands, kissed her on the forehead and got down on one knee. He looked up at her and asked those four amazing words, "Will you marry me?" Elyse cried happy tears, but couldn't utter a sound at first. She only nodded yes. Joe remained on his knee and said she had to answer. She cleared her throat and said "Yes!"

The room was filled with cheers, applause, and tears. Elyse looked around and said thank you to the strangers that congratulated them. She looked up when she heard a familiar yell. At first, she thought it was a bachelorette party, until she noticed a handmade sign that had her's and Joe's last name on it. To her surprise, both of their families were hiding at the bar on the second floor until the question was asked. Elyse couldn't believe that everyone had traveled near and far to be there for their special moment. Both their parents raced down the stairs to congratulate the couple. Elyse smiled from ear to ear as professional photographers snapped every moment and the woman who had been staring asked to share the video she had taken.

Hugs, kisses, love, and support filled their family circle as another cast member presented Elyse with a tiara from Mickey & Minnie. Vacationers cheered as they walked by and shared their best wishes as they took pictures in and around the Grand Floridian.

#10 - Saturday, August Eleventh

There's no way Joe would just end on that! After the pictures were taken, the couple ran back to the room to change their shoes. Inside she would find another Disney and Joe magical surprise! On the bed was a tray of chocolate, champagne, and candles. On the night stand was the largest bouquet of beautiful yellow flowers in a Beauty and the Beast vase holding a small, white envelop just like the others that said:

In this Tale as old as Time,

You're the one who broke the spell.

You are my Enchanted Rose,

and my one, true Belle.

Forever and Always,

Joe

Elyse began crying again at all the details Joe had thought of and executed. It was the most amazing two weeks of her life. They shared a few quiet moments together before heading to Disney Springs to meet their families for a celebratory dinner at Paddlefish.

Having rented a room, they were seated in private room on the top level with a river view. Drinks, laughs, love and happiness filled the air as they ate and celebrated this soon-to-be married couple. Elyse was supposed to start her new job on Monday, but during dinner, she learned she would be going on a Disney vacation and there were more family dinners and excursions planned for all to celebrate.

Disney is the happiest place on Earth, but Joe created had his own Pixie Dust to make this engagement truly one-of-a-kind and a perfect fit for his princess.
